02. Ph.D. Position in Phage Ecology in Microbial Communities:

Ocean ecosystems as well as the human gut depend on microbial populations to function. Phages outnumber bacteria in these ecosystems by a factor of around 10 to 1, infecting enormous numbers of them every day. We don’t currently have a quantitative knowledge of how phages affect the structure and operation of communities, or how complicated community environment influences how phages work on particular hosts. You will investigate marine bacteria and their phages both individually and collectively in this Ph.D. thesis, ranging from straightforward artificial communities to enrichments of natural communities. Through the use of metagenomic sequencing, cutting-edge bioreactor technology, high-throughput characterization techniques, and mathematical modeling, your research will produce a quantitative understanding of the impacts of phages on microbial communities and the ecosystem processes they contribute to.

A new full-time, four-year job for a doctoral (PhD) candidate in the field of environmental economics is available at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM). You will participate in a brand-new, interdisciplinary, four-year research project supported by IVM that examines the potential for voluntary carbon offsets to reduce specific dietary emissions as well as the many strategies for raising people’s willingness to pay for them. Voluntary carbon offsets have been extensively researched in the context of flying behavior, but little is known about how they might affect other personal behaviours, such as diets. Furthermore, there is little research on how well citizens can evaluate such offsetting programmes and how ready they are to pay for them, despite mounting worries about their additional implications.
