The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) is an internship program offered by Japan and is accepting applications for post-doctoral fellowships in 2025. The MIF program was established in 1980 based on the founder’s vision of “Towards A Greater Understanding of Japan and a Lasting World Peace,” the Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) is dedicated to attending global friendship and generosity.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants of non-Japanese nationality who meet the following criteria are encouraged to apply for an MIF internship.
- Applicants must have a Letter of Invitation from host institutions in Japan.
- Applicants having a PH.D. (Doctorate) degree, from a well-recognized institute, can apply.
- Candidates must be at the age of 49 years old or younger at the time when documents are submitted.
- Applicants must be proficient in the English or Japanese languages.
- Applicants should not be residents of Japan. (Except for short-term stay. E.g. sightseeing, conferences)
- Candidate should be in employment in their home countries and must return to their countries upon completion of their MIF internship.

(are given priority. But other Majors holders also can apply)
Number of fellowships
There are 15 fellowships offered by MIF each year.
Duration
The fellowship duration depends upon the research project which is about 3 to 6 months. The commencing month and ending month are between April and March.
Host Institution In Japan
Applicants are free to select their relevant host institutions for research.
Financial Coverage
- Research allowance and stipends for stay is about ¥220,000- per month.

- Air transportation
- Start-up Fund upon arrival ( ¥120,000- is provided to cover the initial costs to start new research stay in Japan)

How to Apply for a Scholarship
First applicants obtained the current issue of the Fellowship Announcement from MIF. Or download the announcement from the MIF’s website and print out the Application Form in PDF format or MS Word file.
The application should be submitted from the applicant’s home country. MIF only accepts the applications submitted by POST. MIF can’t accept applications submitted electronically or via facsimile.
