Scholarship Support:

Eligible candidates for this study program in Europe will receive the following benefits:

  • Ph.D. scholarship at Ghent University (24 months).
  • 24 months Ph.D. research will be conducted at a partner university in the South, for which no bursaries are offered. This research component (24 months) should be funded (eg a local PhD scholarship or salary) at a South African partner institution.
  • The Ghent University promoter receives a benchmark of € 310 / month of research in Ghent + € 8000 travel budget to cover (part) of operating expenses, as well as part of student travel expenses with Ghent University and local promoters.

Application Requirements:

Before applying for a Ph.D. bursary students at Ghent University need to always find a Ghent University professor who is willing to work as the administrator (‘facilitator’) of their medical research and who agrees to support their application. The best way to do this is to browse the list of skills and research topics found in the research catalog.

  • Proposals must be submitted jointly by the candidate, the facilitator at Ghent University and the associate dean of the university.
  • There are no restrictions on the research field, however, appropriate topics will be selected for development.
  • Candidates need to emerge – and have nationality – from a developing country.
  • There must be a guarantee that the candidate will be able to fully participate in the Ph.D. project for a period of 24 months at a partner university in the selected developing country (South). This means that the following conditions need to be met:
  • there must be a local Ph.D. university administrator affiliated with a research institute in the South.
  • A Written Statement is requested stating that the candidate is either a fully-funded Ph.D. student or a member of the university affiliated with him or her.
  • and will be adequately liberated from teaching or other assignments so that he or she can focus more fully on Ph.D. research in the South.
  • The statement should also state that the candidate receives a local Ph.D. Bursary or salary for a period of 24 months while working at a partner Ph.D. university in the South.

Necessary Documents:

  • Counseling for the candidate, which announces the manager’s opinion about the candidate’s ability as a future researcher.
  • Advice on ethics and biosafety for a research project to be proposed.
  • Passport for international students.
  • Short Resume / CV.
  • Encouraging Letter or Statement of Intent.
  • Curriculum or Research Proposal.
  • Letters of Commendation.
  • Health Certificate.
