13. Ph.D. Position F/M Machine learning for extreme weather forecasting:
Extreme weather conditions, such as heat waves and severe storms, can have a significant effect on society, especially when it comes to the hazards they cause, like flooding, wildfires, and drought. As societies attempt to adapt to a changing climate, machine learning can help to improve the forecasting of such extreme events. The majority of modern weather forecasting is based on numerical weather prediction (NWP), which uses supercomputer-based models that are physics-driven. Due to the high computational cost of running these NWP models, the projections are not updated in real time. Researchers in the IT sector are currently competing to anticipate weather better than NWP by training deep learning models on reanalysis data sets (such as ERA5).
Deadline: 04th August 2023
14. Ph.D. Position F/M Ph.D. proposal – Modeling and Calibration of Crowd Behaviors in Public Spaces:
At each of these stages, a crowd simulation is an effective tool for forecasting crowd behavior in planned or existing locations, assisting with situational analysis, and presenting scenarios for how a certain situation might develop. But in actual application, this technology is still not very common. One of the main causes of this is how difficult it is to configure a simulator for a particular scenario. Another major factor is how well a simulator can really simulate crowd conduct, which is greatly influenced by the type of event and the facilities used to host it. By addressing these two barriers—the realm of validity and automatic calibration—this thesis aims to expand the application of crowd simulators to the management of large-scale events.
Deadline: 04th August 2023
15. Ph.D. Position F/M Next generation of development environments:
Domain-Specific Languages (DSL) are widely used in academia and industry today. Engineers and scientists are subject matter specialists who use DSLs to carry out tasks unique to their line of work. DSLs serve as interfaces between domain experts and their technical challenges at a good level of abstraction. Domain experts specifically employ DSLs in specialized settings (IDE, or integrated development environment). Experts manage DSL models in these settings by utilizing common interactive features (such as auto-completion, templating, error checking, and navigation) and the DSL’s concrete syntax, which can be graphical, textual, or tabular.

19. Ph.D. Position F/M Dolev-Yao model-guided fuzzing of cryptographic protocols:
The purpose of this Ph.D. thesis is to support the DY Fuzzing initiative. Dolev Yao (DY) model-guided fuzzing, which we propose in this research, is a novel and useful technique that prevents logical attacks on protocol implementations. The fundamental concept is to employ a mutation-based fuzzer to investigate the set of abstract DY executions of the DY attacker as potential test cases. A preliminary explanation of these concepts and a prototype DY fuzzer implementation are provided in [1]. This initial study sets the door for numerous follow-up efforts, such as plugging the fuzzer of various TLS implementations, creating fuzzes for additional protocols (such as DTLS, QUIC, WPA, etc.), and creating better metrics to direct the fuzzer.

24. Ph.D. Position F/M Big Data and Machine Learning Methods for Direct-to-Satellite Internet of Things:
As a result, significant effort is being made to create specialized and embedded artificial intelligence hardware (AI-HW) that can manage the massive amounts of memory, quick processing, and energy-intensive data transit that AI requires in order to operate at its peak performance. Additionally, it is highly desirable to have “explainable AI,” also known as eXplainable AI (XAI), in order to increase AI transparency and confidence, responsibly use AI in the context of critical applications, and expand its potential application areas. At the moment, XAI is receiving a lot of attention. As a direct result, there is a lot of work being done on developing specialized and embedded artificial intelligence hardware (AI-HW) to handle the enormous amounts of memory, fast processing, and energy-intensive data transportation that AI needs in order to function at its maximum capacity. Additionally, eXplainable AI (XAI), often known as “explainable AI,” is extremely desirable in order to boost AI transparency and confidence, employ AI responsibly in the context of essential applications, and broaden its potential application areas. XAI is currently a topic of great attention. Similar to conventional computing hardware, AI-HW is susceptible to errors from a variety of causes, including variation in the fabrication process parameters, latent flaws, and even environmental stress. The part HW failures can play in AI is one of the underappreciated elements.
