 (01) Research at quantitative insight into the influence of ig waves:

  • University Name: Ghent University
  • Funded By: Flanders
  • Deadline: 20th August 2023

A hybrid soft-hard coastal protection structure is often used to defend urban centers in low-lying coastal zones from flooding caused by storm surges and waves. These buildings mix a barrier with a steep slope with a beach with a gentle slope. A wave and washing zone begins to form in front of the dam bottom for less deep water cases on the beach. Longer waves, or “infragravity (ig) waves,” expand in height due to pushing and energy transfer from the short waves (ss), whereas short waves (ss) drop in height due to wave breaking. The wave destroying is significantly influenced by the ig wave-related processes, but this effect has not been thoroughly studied. The study tries to obtain a more (quantitative) understanding of the impact of ig.

(02) Research on the Extent to English as a Foreign Language learners experience difficulties:

  • University Name: Ghent University
  • Deadline: : 10th July 2023

Even for advanced learners, it can be surprisingly difficult to listen to a language that is not their own. This is especially true if the speaker has a regional or foreign accent that is unfamiliar. While listeners may easily adjust to changes in their original language, it can be more challenging to do so when the language is not their own. Language learners must be able to understand a wide range of English accents because the language has millions of native and non-native speakers. The project’s goal is to learn how much difficulty EFL students have understanding speech with regional and non-native accents, what factors especially make speech difficult to understand, and how we could inform students on what they think of accented Speech in English.

(03) Research Project on Textile Modelling and Characterization:

  • Universities Name: Ghent University
  • Deadline:  30th September 2023

The major goal of this project is to provide a Multi-Scale Modeling Framework for Textiles that will enable accurate modeling of processes used in the production of textiles, including yarn unfolding from bobbins, weft introduction during weaving, stitching, and pressing. An experimental study track that focuses on sophisticated mechanical testing of textile materials and their linkages on both a lab- and an industrial-scale (For Example, in-situ measurements on textile machines) is available in addition to a strong numerical research focus. We obtain significantly greater insights into the rate-dependent behavior of various textile materials, spreading from yarn to fabric, using techniques like Digital Image Correlation and high-speed cameras.

(04)  Research Project on Classification of Psychometric Items in Terms of Informational Content:

  • University Name: Ghent University
  • Deadline: 07th July 2023

In this research, a framework is proposed in which psychometric items, such as questionnaire responses or clinical symptoms, are grouped according to their informative content, which can be categorized as synergistic or redundant.
By offering developments and answers that are both statistical and conceptual, this strategy will promote and supplement the growing field of network psychometrics. The established tools will enable psychometrics researchers to move above a paired network representation and focus on the higher-order behavior of the data. In this project, datasets that have been represented as combined networks will be reanalyzed, and the results will be reinterpreted in a way that is free to the traditional reading in terms of hidden variables and factors.

(05) Research Project at FunGen Lab (Functional Genomics Lab):

  • University Name: Ghent University
  • Deadline: 31st July 2023

The FunGen Lab (Functional Genomics Lab) is accepting applications for a fully-funded, one-year computational/bioinformatics Ph.D. position with the potential for a three-year extension (after a favorable evaluation) to study the regulatory environment of the genes associated with Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs). The FunGen Lab is a member of RARE-MED, a multidisciplinary partnership launched in 2019 at Ghent University for fundamental and translational research in precision medicine for rare diseases. Although recent advances in technology have significantly increased diagnostic yield and identified a number of new NDD-associated genes, many disease genes remain unidentified, and the non-coding region of the genome has also received little attention.

(06)  Research Project on AIV:

  • University Name: Ghent University
  • Deadline: 31st July 2023

The type A influenza virus (AIV), which has 18 hemagglutinin (HA) and 9 neuraminidase (NA) subtypes, is what causes avian influenza (AI). Gallinaceous poultry that is exposed to the high pathogenicity strains (HPAI) H5 and H7 develop severe systemic illness. High pathogenicity strains can spread zoonotic diseases. With a total of 3777 recorded HPAI detections and roughly 22 900 000 infected poultry birds in 31 European countries, the 2020–2021 AI epidemic appears to be one of the worst HPAI outbreaks to have hit Europe. In Europe, biosecurity is the main preventive control tool, although on some farms, such as those that raise free-range housed chickens, AIV infection can occur due to flaws in biosecurity systems. For nations without AI, viral eradication is the recommended method of response to HPAI epidemics.

(08)   Research Projects in the Energy Domain:

  • University Name: Ghent University
  • Deadline: 31st December 2023

Our research team is actively working on energy-related research projects, mostly involving smart grid applications. Our AI4E team’s focus in these projects is on data analytics and coordination algorithms for things like demand response, for example. A key goal of the applications we want to enable is to allow for widespread adoption of renewable energy sources (such as wind turbines and solar panels) without placing an undue burden on the infrastructure of the power grid. This entails employing data analytics techniques, building generative models, implementing machine learning, etc. to characterise and eventually anticipate both power generation (from renewable sources) and consumption behaviour (and its flexibility, e.g., what percentage thereof can be shifted in time).

(09) Gut Immunology and Oral Vaccine Development:

  • University Name: Ghent University
  • Deadline: 01st August 2023

The development of oral vaccines and gut immunology are the main scientific interests of professor Bert Devriendt’s team. We are looking for a driven PhD student to work on a research project on the development of oral vaccines that is sponsored by FWO. A billion lives have been saved by vaccination. Injection-based vaccinations currently available do not provide protection against illnesses caused by gut microorganisms. Oral vaccines have a great deal of potential to protect against these infections, but their development is difficult since the gut epithelium does a poor job of absorbing vaccinations. The delivery of vaccinations by recombinant antibodies to aminopeptidase N on the epithelium has been demonstrated by our team to facilitate the uptake of vaccines by the gut tissues. In turn, this leads to strong immunological responses that defend against infection.

(10)  Research Project on Foodborne Parasitic Zoonoses:

  • University Name: Ghent University
  • Deadline: 08th July 2023

The focus of Prof. Sarah Gabril’s research team is on parasite zoonoses that are spread through food. Although several parasites are discussed, the current effort focuses on the fishborne parasite Anisakis. The Federale Overheidsdienst (FOD) (Belgium) is funding the ANISALL project, which is titled “Anisakidae: Studying the Hidden Allergic Concerns in Fish, Pork, and Chicken Meat.” Food operators face a serious difficulty because of the prevalence of allergens. Anisakis simplex, a zoonotic fishborne nematode, causes a variety of clinical presentations, including allergic reactions and symptoms of the abdomen. The occurrence of allergy reactions following consumption of (fresh, frozen, or cooked) fish contaminated with Anisakis species is being reported more frequently.
