(01) Ph.D. Degree in Neuroplasticity and Pain (CNAP):
Ph.D. position summary/title: Ph.D. Stipends for Neuroplasticity and Pain (CNAP)
This project will investigate changes in excitability and connectivity in persons with chronic pain using transcranial magnetic stimulation and concurrent EEG monitoring. TMS-EEG investigates single TMS pulses delivered to pain-relevant cortical hubs to examine connection, network characterization, and oscillation pattern assessment.
Deadline: 08/05/2023
(02) Ph.D. Degree in Acoustic Signal Processing:
Ph.D. position summary/title: Ph.D. Stipend in Acoustic Signal Processing and Deep Learning for Hearing Assistive Devices (8-23017)
The Ph.D. project’s purpose is to investigate and build algorithms that filter chaotic speech in order to improve speech intelligibility, sound quality, and listening comfort in the setting of a hearing assistance device. More specifically, we envision a project that begins with “classical” statistical signal (voice) processing approaches and progresses to deep learning techniques, potentially generative models, and unique learning paradigms such as self-supervised learning. In contrast to much prior work, the emphasis will be on algorithms that, rather than just suppressing background noise, modify the target speech signal to make it more comprehensible.
Deadline: 08/05/2023
(03) Ph.D. Degree in Multiscale Mechanical Modelling of Toughened Adhesive Joints:
Ph.D. position summary/title: Ph.D. Stipends in Multiscale Mechanical Modelling of Toughened Adhesive Joints in Large Composite Structures
The modeling of the joint is the primary focus of the Ph.D. project. A multiscale model of the joint and damage mechanisms is used. First, a thorough multiscale model of fatigue-driven damage will be built on length scales ranging from m to cm. Based on this multiscale model, a machine learning model that simulates the consequences of damage development relevant to a structural scale model will be built.
This model should be coupled with an existing damage prediction framework based on FEM. Another project researcher will be in charge of experimental characterization. Cooperation is anticipated between this modeling-oriented effort and the work of the experimentally focused researcher. This Ph.D. project’s key themes include damage and fracture mechanics, programming, machine learning models, finite element method, and composite materials.
