The emergence of new institutions for collective action, often known as collectivities or “commons,” is notable for their prevalence in many industries and propensity to use similar sorts of norms and methods to achieve resilience despite variations in resource types. Its rules and modifications, as well as how they attempt to mediate the effect of changes in the amount and heterogeneity of both resources and members of these organizations, have undergone various variations over time.
For this project, the Ph.D. candidate will examine the internal operations (such as member loyalty, rules, and values) of a particular class of collectivities that were established in the past in Europe with the goal of managing (natural) resources. Some of these collectivities were initially structured as guilds and later changed their organizational structure to become cooperatives. For a variety of reasons, including enhancing security and gaining economic advantages by cooperating closely, collective action was crucial for these communities to function. In order to comprehend how a system for collective action can be (become) robust in the long run, it is crucial to understand how they accomplished it, the rules they created, and how they prevented freeriding inside the collectivity in connection to ongoing changes in the group size and heterogeneity.
